A new peer group for older adults to share ideas and advice has begun in Excelsior Springs.

Featuring Older Adult Educator Becky Franklin, the group gathers at 10 a.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Good Samaritan Center, 108 S Thompson Ave, Excelsior Springs.

Franklin presents information and ideas for older adults in Clay, Platte and Ray counties as part of her work for Tri-County Mental Health Services. A frequent guest speaker from Riverside to Richmond, her Excelsior Springs presentations will mix formal presentations with friendly dialog on topics ranging from fighting the dangers of falling to dealing with grief. Key topics include coping skills and practical ways to deal with stress.

“High levels of stress or chronic stress can have a negative impact on our overall health,” Franklin explained. “This group aims to teach practical ways to approach stress management. Each month, I teach a different coping skill and we practice the skill together. Our aim is to empower older adults to feel more in control even when facing change or difficult circumstances.”
